GPT-Live Introduces a New Generation of Voice AI
OpenAI has unveiled GPT-Live, a new family of speech-native AI models designed to make conversations with ChatGPT feel more natural and responsive. Unlike previous voice assistants, GPT-Live supports full-duplex conversations, allowing the model to listen and speak simultaneously while handling interruptions, pauses, and changes in conversation flow in real time.
The company says the new architecture significantly reduces latency and creates a more human-like conversational experience across web, iOS, and Android.
GPT-5.6 Becomes the Default Intelligence Behind ChatGPT
Alongside GPT-Live, OpenAI announced that GPT-5.6 is now the preferred model powering ChatGPT. The rollout replaces earlier default models with the company's latest flagship AI, bringing improvements across reasoning, coding, research, scientific analysis, and knowledge work.
GPT-5.6 is available as a family of three models:

Terra — a lower-cost model optimized for balanced performance.

Luna — the fastest and most cost-efficient version for lightweight applications.
Stronger Performance With Better Efficiency
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 sets a new benchmark for performance while using fewer tokens than previous frontier models.
The company reports state-of-the-art results in coding, scientific research, cybersecurity, and professional knowledge work, while introducing new reasoning modes that allow the model to spend more time solving difficult problems. GPT-5.6 also adds an Ultra mode that coordinates multiple sub-agents for complex workflows requiring planning and tool use.
Voice and Intelligence Combined
The launch of GPT-Live and GPT-5.6 represents OpenAI's biggest ChatGPT upgrade in months.
While GPT-Live improves how users interact with the assistant through speech, GPT-5.6 significantly upgrades the underlying intelligence powering those conversations. OpenAI says the combination enables faster, more natural, and more capable AI experiences across everyday tasks and professional workflows.
The company also plans to make GPT-Live available through its API, allowing developers to build real-time voice assistants, customer support systems, and AI-powered applications using the same technology.
