Chinese AI company Moonshot AI has announced Kimi K3, a new open-weight large language model featuring 2.8 trillion parameters. The model supports a context window of up to 1 million tokens, processes text, images, and video, and is already available through the Kimi web interface, API, and Kimi Code development platform.
Moonshot also confirmed that the model's weights will be publicly released, making Kimi K3 one of the largest open-weight AI models announced to date.
Built for Multimodal AI and Agent Workflows
According to Moonshot AI, Kimi K3 is designed for a wide range of enterprise and developer use cases.
The model supports multimodal reasoning, software development tasks, long-context processing, and AI agent workflows. Alongside the model, the company introduced K3 Swarm, a new orchestration mode that allows multiple AI agents to work in parallel on complex tasks, improving efficiency for advanced problem-solving scenarios.
Benchmarks Show Competitive Performance
Moonshot published internal benchmark results indicating that Kimi K3 outperforms Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8 in several evaluation tests.
However, the company also acknowledged that Kimi K3 trails some leading closed-source frontier models, including Fable, in certain benchmarks.
Independent third-party evaluations are expected after the model's weights become publicly available.

Kimi K3 is immediately available through several official services, including the Kimi web application, Kimi API, Kimi Code, and third-party AI platforms.
